Winter Well-being

Winter Well-being

As the days shorten and temperatures drop, many of us feel a shift, not just in the weather, but in our energy and mood. For business owners, winter isn't just about chilly mornings and extra layers; it's also a time of heightened demands with the End of Financial Year (EOFY) and the onset of Q3 planning. Amidst these pressures, it's crucial to prioritise your wellbeing.

Understanding Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that typically occurs during certain times of the year, most commonly in winter. While it's relatively rare in Australia, some individuals may still experience symptoms such as low mood, excessive sleep, increased appetite (particularly for carbohydrates), and a general lack of energy. These symptoms are believed to be linked to reduced exposure to sunlight, which can affect the body's internal clock and the production of mood-regulating hormones like melatonin and serotonin. 5 Simple Strategies to Boost Winter Wellbeing

Even if you don't experience SAD, the winter months can still take a toll on your physical and mental health. Here are five practical tips to help you stay energised and focused:

  1. Maximise Natural Light Exposure
Try to spend time outdoors during daylight hours, especially in the morning. Natural light can help regulate your circadian rhythms and improve mood.

  2. Maintain a Balanced Diet
Incorporate seasonal fruits and vegetables into your meals. Foods rich in vitamin C can support your immune system. Don’t forget your vitamin D, especially with less sun.

  3. Stay Physically Active
Regular movement can boost your energy levels and support your mental health. Even a brisk walk can help shake off sluggishness.

  4. Prioritise Sleep Hygiene
Keep a consistent sleep schedule and wind down properly in the evenings. Your body repairs best with quality rest.

  5. Stay Connected
Whether it’s a text check-in or a walk with a mate, social connection can lift your spirits and keep you grounded.

My Go-To Winter Wellness Rituals

When it comes to winter, I like to lean into the season with a few go-to favourites that warm the body and calm the mind:

  • Soups on repeat: There’s something comforting about a nourishing bowl of soup. Think slow-cooked bone broths, veggie-packed lentil soups, or classic chicken and sweetcorn. It's warm, filling, and supports your gut and immune system.

  • Sauna sessions: Saunas aren’t just relaxing they also help support detoxification, improve circulation, and may even help relieve muscle tension. A weekly sauna is my personal reset button in the colder months.

  • Salt therapy: Also known as halotherapy, salt rooms are said to improve respiratory health, reduce inflammation, and support relaxation. Perfect for winter when colds and sniffles are more common.

  • Self-care with purpose: Whether it’s a massage, a float tank session or a visit to the day spa, booking time for yourself isn't indulgent, it's essential. These small pockets of rest help me recharge mentally and physically.

Navigating EOFY and Q3 with Wellness in Mind

Winter often coincides with the EOFY a period marked by financial reviews, reporting, and strategic planning for the upcoming quarter. It's easy to become consumed by work during this time, but neglecting personal wellbeing can lead to burnout.

Consider integrating wellness into your business routine:

  • Schedule Regular Breaks

  • Set Realistic Goals

  • Delegate When Possible

  • Reflect and Plan

Taking time to reset now can help you move into Q3 with clarity and purpose. There’s still plenty of the year left to tick off those big milestones but you don’t have to run on empty to get there.

Stay Well.
